US to give drink containers closer look at airports

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - U.S. authorities are warning air travelers to expect greater scrutiny of thermoses and other insulated drink containers at security checkpoints after intelligence suggested they could be used to hide explosives.

As a result, passengers flying within and to the United States may notice additional security measures related to insulated beverage containers in coming days, the notice posted on Thursday said.

Anderson To Reignite United’s Title Challenge

His performance last night in particular was a sign of what Anderson is capable of when he puts his mind to it. Comfortably the best player on the pitch, he controlled the midfield and orchestrated much of United’s good forward play. He scored the vital equaliser that ensured United topped their Champions’ League group and avoided European giants like Barcelona and Real Madrid in the first knock out stage, and would have had a couple of assists to his name had Dimitar Berbatov been more clinical in front of goal.

His incisive passing through the Valencia defence to the United strikers as well as his long balls out wide to Nani and Park were exquisite, and while it’s far too early to talk of him replacing the genius of Scholes, the signs are definitely there that he has the potential to come very close.

He also said Malaysia could reach a property glut from overzealous development and cautioned against following in the footsteps of Dubai, Hong Kong and Japan, which suffered from a credit crisis due to overbuilding.

Shots fired were meant to stop car, says inspector

SHAH ALAM: The gunshot marks on the car teenager Aminulrasyid Amzah was driving the night he was shot dead showed that it was an attempt by the police to stop the vehicle.

Chief Inspector Mazli Jusoh @ Che Kob told the Sessions Court yesterday his finding was based on the pattern of the gunshot marks, which were found at the bottom of the white Proton Iswara Aeroback with registration number BET 5023.

"I examined the car the night of the incident on April 26 and found that most of the gunshot marks were at the bottom of the vehicle," he said when questioned by counsel M. Athimulan.

"The only one found in the upper part of the car was a shot entering the rear window and through the driver seat's head rest."

Mazli said he only collected one bullet cartridge the night he first visited the crime scene. The other 18 cartridges and slugs were recovered two days later.

He admitted this was because of his carelessness and also said there could have been more bullet slugs or cartridges at the crime scene which were not recovered.Read more at www.nst.com.my

Death toll in Indonesian tsunami, volcano tops 340

Hundreds were still missing after Monday's 10-foot (3-meter) wave spawned by a massive quake struck the remote Mentawi islands off western Sumatra, where rescue officials - kept away for days because of stormy seas and bad weather - started arriving at the scene to chart the scope of the devastation.

The islands lie close to the epicenter of the 7.7-magnitude quake that struck late Monday beneath the ocean floor. The fault line on Sumatra island's coast is the same one that caused the 2004 quake and tsunami that killed 230,000 people in a dozen countries around the Indian Ocean.

Indonesia's version, completed in 2008 with German aid, has since fallen into such disrepair that it effectively stopped working about a month ago, according to the head of the Meteorology and Geophysic Agency.

The system, which uses buoys to electronically detect sudden changes in water level, worked when it was completed, but by 2009 routine tests of it were showing problems, said the agency chief, who uses the single name Fauzi.

By last month, he said, the entire system was broken because of inexperienced operators.

On the ash-covered slopes of Mount Merapi, authorities continued a search for more victims.

About 36,000 people have been evacuated, according to the Indonesian Red Cross. Some defied authorities and returned home to check on crops and possessions left behind. More than 11,000 people live on Merapi's fertile slopes.

Among the dead from Tuesday's eruption was an 83-year-old man named Maridjan, who was entrusted by a late king from the nearby city of Yogyakarta to watch over the mountain's unpredictable spirits. He had refused to leave his house high on its slopes.

The discovery Wednesday of his ash-covered body, reportedly found in a position of Islamic prayer, kneeling face-down on the floor, rattled residents who for years joined his ceremonies to appease the rumbling giant by throwing rice, clothes and chickens into the crater.

More disturbing Roo-ne

The rich still asks the poor to "eat bread".

Amplify’d from www.independent.co.uk
The Independent

As Rooney cashes in, his adopted city prepares for worst of cuts

Unsettled striker will earn up to £200,000 a week for next five years, whilst in Manchester alone, 40,000 workers are expected to their lose jobs by 2014.

So, too, has the amount of money he will be paid. According to sources within the game, Rooney will now be awarded up to £200,000 each week for the next five years to kick a ball for United. It is a weekly pay packet from which he could still expect change if he was planning to buy a red-brick, three-bedroom, semi-detached home in the neighbourhood of Manchester United's ground, Old Trafford, an area with deprivation and high numbers of poor immigrant families which by historical quirk has provided the setting for the most popular football team in the world since the patch of land was carved out from beside the Cheshire railway line in 1910.

It is now estimated that 40,000 people in the Greater Manchester area will lose their jobs as a result of Chancellor George Osborne's plans to cut £83bn from public spending to fight the deficit. Those cuts will translate into the loss of 30,000 public-sector posts and a further 10,000 job losses from private businesses.

For those disembarking from the coaches outside Old Trafford in the drizzle last night under the watchful gaze of the United Trinity – statues of George Best, Denis Law and Bobby Charlton – most could only wonder at the riches on show. Igor Michurin, 34, a doctor from Novosibirsk in central Russia, emerged from the megastore clutching a pair of Manchester United pyjamas for his daughter. He said his club, FC Sibir, could never afford to sign a Rooney. "Yes, he is a very good footballer, but he needs to grow up. He makes mistakes, but that is natural when you are young." Bayu Chang, a 33-year-old banker from Malaysia, was less understanding: "For me, he should go, because he has the intention to go. It's too much money, of course, at such a young age."
